The iGEN core team held a meeting with Dr. Miriam Dalli, Minister for Environment, Energy and Enterprise, on January 23 at the ministry offices in Valletta. The session focused on establishing a long-term partnership to address sustainability and diversity within the Maltese iGaming sector.
The discussion followed collaborative efforts between iGEN and the ministry during the World Cleanup Day event. Representatives from iGEN, including chairman Enrico Bradamante and communications coordinator Glen Smith, joined executives from Betsson, Aspire Global, and Gaming Malta. Ministry advisors Andrea Bellia, Kristy Bartolo, and Katrina Cuschieri also attended the session.
The group reviewed iGEN’s current environmental, social, and governance initiatives before outlining a framework for future cooperation.
Proposed Sustainability Measures
iGEN presented several recommendations for regulatory and operational improvements. The proposal includes redirecting resources from large-scale green construction projects toward the protection of existing natural habitats and public access. Additional measures cover enhanced funding and enforcement authority for eco-rangers and EPU-police, alongside a unified digital platform for reporting environmental violations. The group also addressed waste management infrastructure, national awareness campaigns, and compliance with the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.Ministry representatives confirmed that several initiatives are already under development, though public communication regarding these efforts remains limited. The conversation also covered newly implemented refuse collection schedules, the BCRS bottle recycling system, urban community gardens, and rural access restrictions.
The meeting established a baseline for ongoing dialogue between the gaming industry and government environmental agencies.
