Google Bans Prediction Market Extensions from Chrome Web Store

Google has announced a ban on browser extensions that facilitate real-money prediction markets within the Chrome Web Store. The policy update will take effect on August 1 and targets tools linked to platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket.

These extensions typically display real-time contract prices, send alerts, or simplify order placement while users browse. The updated Developer Program Policies explicitly prohibit products enabling real-money transactions on predictive outcomes. However, simulated versions offering no cash prizes may remain available provided they clearly state that users cannot win real money.

Data Privacy and Regulatory Context

Google is simultaneously tightening data collection rules. Extensions may now gather only the information required for their core function. Developers must disclose what data is collected, the purpose of its use, sharing practices, and retention periods.

Any future changes to these practices require direct communication with users. A Google statement noted that building user trust is paramount and that stricter baselines ensure the store remains a secure platform.

The update coincides with increased regulatory scrutiny regarding whether event contracts should be classified as financial instruments or gambling products. This policy change does not affect the Google Finance integration, which began displaying odds from Kalshi and Polymarket alongside traditional market data in November 2025.
